An office car park is close to the perfect charging location. Cars arrive in the morning and stay for most of the day, so even moderate charging power is enough to give every vehicle a full top-up. For employers, workplace charging is a visible benefit that costs relatively little and supports their sustainability commitments.
Why employers are adding charging
- Attracting and keeping staff: employees who are considering an EV, or who live in apartments without home charging, value a reliable place to charge.
- Sustainability goals: supporting electric commuting helps reduce the emissions linked to the business.
- Company fleets: the same chargers can serve pool cars and company vehicles.
- Visitors: charging for clients and guests gives a good impression of the business.
Choosing the right chargers
Because cars stay for hours, most workplaces do not need high-power chargers. Lower-power chargers spread across more bays usually serve staff better than one or two fast units. A small number of faster chargers can be added for visitors and pool vehicles that need a quick top-up.
Free or paid?
| Approach | Notes |
|---|---|
| Free charging | The strongest benefit, but can lead to bays being occupied all day |
| Subsidised rate | Staff pay a reduced price per kWh, covering part of the cost |
| Cost price | Staff pay what the energy costs, with the company covering equipment |
Whatever the choice, check the tax treatment of the benefit with your finance or HR advisor.
Fair access
When demand outgrows the number of chargers, simple rules keep things fair: a booking system, a time limit or a move-on reminder sent by app, and idle fees after charging is complete. Load management lets more chargers share the building's supply without an expensive upgrade.
Start with a staff survey. Knowing how many employees drive EVs today, and how many plan to, sizes the first phase and the space to reserve for the next.
