Public venues

Hospitals, airports and railway stations as charging hubs

Large public venues draw thousands of vehicles a day and have long dwell times. Why they make strong charging locations, and what to plan for.

TERMINAL · EV P2

Hospitals, airports and railway stations see a constant flow of vehicles: patients and visitors, travellers, taxis, staff and service fleets. Cars often stay for hours. These sites already manage large car parks and electrical infrastructure, which makes them natural locations for charging hubs.

Who charges at these venues

  • Visitors and travellers parked for hours or days.
  • Taxis and ride-hailing drivers waiting for their next passenger.
  • Staff on long shifts, including night shifts.
  • Venue fleets such as ambulances, shuttle buses and service vehicles.

Special considerations

Hospitals must protect critical power supplies, so charging needs careful electrical design and load management that never competes with medical equipment. Airports often run electric ground support equipment and shuttle buses, which can share infrastructure with public charging. Railway stations are hubs for taxis, autos and e-rickshaws, so light EV charging is especially useful there.

At venues with critical loads, smart charging is not optional. Chargers must be designed to reduce or pause automatically when the site needs its power elsewhere.

Making it work for the venue

Charging can add a revenue stream to existing parking, support sustainability targets and improve the visitor experience. Many venues prefer an operator model, where a charge point operator invests in and runs the chargers while the venue provides the space and earns a share of revenue.

How PxT can help

PxT Energies plans charging for large public venues, including electrical design around critical loads, phased rollout across car parks, and operator partnerships that require little upfront investment.
