Light EVs

Two- and three-wheeler charging: an overlooked market

Most electric vehicles on Indian roads have two or three wheels. Why light EV charging deserves far more attention from operators and site hosts.

LIGHT EV CHARGING · 2W · 3W

Public conversation about EV charging tends to focus on cars. Yet on Indian roads, two-wheelers and three-wheelers make up the large majority of electric vehicles sold. Electric scooters, motorcycles, e-rickshaws and cargo three-wheelers are everywhere, and many of their riders have nowhere reliable to charge.

How light EVs charge today

Many electric scooters charge from an ordinary socket at home using a portable charger, or use removable batteries carried indoors. That works for owners with secure parking and a socket. It does not work for riders in shared housing, for commercial users who ride all day, or for e-rickshaw drivers who need a top-up between shifts.

Who needs public light EV charging

  • Delivery riders covering long distances every day, who need fast top-ups during breaks.
  • E-rickshaw and auto drivers whose income depends on time on the road.
  • Apartment residents without a socket near their parking spot.
  • Commuters who want the confidence of a charge near work or transit.

Why it is attractive for operators

Light EV chargers cost much less than car fast chargers and need far less power, so they fit within existing connections at shops, fuel stations, markets and parking lots. Commercial riders charge often and predictably, which supports good utilisation. A charging point can become a reason for riders to return to the same shop, café or fuel station every day.

A single compact light EV charging station with several outlets can serve dozens of riders a day while drawing a fraction of the power of one car fast charger.

Standards and compatibility

Light EVs have historically used a variety of connectors and charging methods. A common connector standard for light EVs has been introduced in India to bring more consistency, and operators should choose equipment that supports the vehicles most common in their area. Multi-outlet stations that serve both standard and proprietary connectors help during the transition.

Designing a good light EV site

  • Covered, well-lit space with room for scooters and three-wheelers to manoeuvre.
  • Simple payment, including app-less options, for riders who want to charge and go.
  • Fair pricing per kWh or per session, with clear display before charging starts.
  • Secure parking, so riders can leave vehicles while they eat or rest.
