Charging takes time, and drivers sometimes need to charge late at night or alone. Every driver should feel safe at a charging station, and many women drivers tell us that safety is one of their first concerns when choosing where to charge.
For drivers
- Choose stations with activity: sites at malls, hotels, fuel stations or restaurants with staff and other people around.
- Check reviews and photos in charging apps for lighting and security.
- Plan night stops in advance so you are not searching in the dark.
- Share your live location with someone you trust on long or late trips.
- Stay in the car with doors locked if you feel uncomfortable, and keep your phone charged.
- Leave if something feels wrong. Your safety matters more than the charge.
- Save emergency numbers: the national emergency number 112 and the women's helpline 181.
For site owners and operators
| Feature | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Bright, even lighting | Removes dark corners around bays and walkways |
| CCTV with visible signs | Deters bad behaviour and supports investigation |
| Help or SOS button | A direct line to help at any hour |
| Location near activity | Staffed or busy areas feel safer than isolated corners |
| Clear sightlines | Drivers can see who is around them |
| Facilities open late | Washrooms and a place to wait |
Safety features are not extras. A station that feels unsafe at night will lose customers, and those customers will tell others.
