What dynamic power sharing is, and why it matters for multi-gun stations

A charging station with several guns rarely needs full power on every one. How dynamic sharing puts power where it is needed.

Many fast-charging stations have two or more charging guns, or a central power cabinet feeding several dispensers. Dynamic power sharing decides, second by second, how the station's total power is split between the vehicles connected to it.

Fixed split vs. dynamic sharing

With a fixed split, a 240 kW charger with two guns might give each gun 120 kW, whatever is plugged in. If one car can accept only 50 kW, 70 kW of capacity sits unused while the other car could have charged faster.

With dynamic sharing, the charger gives each vehicle what it can accept, up to the station's total. The car that accepts 50 kW gets 50 kW; the other gets the remaining 190 kW, if it can use it.

Why vehicles' needs change

A battery accepts the most power when it is low, and gradually less as it fills. Two cars that plug in at different times have very different needs. Dynamic sharing follows those changes through the session, moving power from the nearly full car to the one that has just arrived.

BenefitWhy it matters
Faster average chargingInstalled power is used, not wasted
More vehicles servedThroughput rises at busy times
Smaller grid connectionThe site total can be capped while each vehicle still charges well
FlexibilityThe same station suits cars, vans and larger vehicles

Ask suppliers how power is allocated between guns, in what steps, and how quickly the split adjusts. The answers make a real difference to driver experience.

Where it matters most

Dynamic sharing is most valuable at busy hubs with a mix of vehicle types, at fleet depots with many vehicles charging together, and at sites where grid capacity is limited.
