Companies are under growing pressure from investors, customers and regulators to report on their environmental performance. In India, large listed companies report through SEBI's Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report (BRSR). EV charging, for fleets, employees and customers, is one of the most tangible climate actions a company can show, if it is measured and reported properly.
Where charging shows up in emissions reporting
Most companies report greenhouse gas emissions in three scopes, following the GHG Protocol:
| Scope | What it covers | How charging affects it |
|---|---|---|
| Scope 1 | Direct emissions, such as fuel burned in company vehicles | Switching fleet vehicles to electric removes tailpipe fuel emissions |
| Scope 2 | Emissions from purchased electricity | Electricity for charging adds to Scope 2, which renewable sourcing can reduce |
| Scope 3 | Other value-chain emissions, such as employee commuting | Workplace charging can support lower-emission commuting |
What to measure
- Energy delivered by each charger, from charger data rather than estimates.
- Number of sessions and users, separated by fleet, employee and visitor use.
- Source of the electricity: grid, on-site solar or renewable procurement.
- Fuel displaced, based on the kilometres driven on that energy.
Credible reporting depends on measured data. Networked chargers record every kWh by session, which gives auditors a clear trail from meter to report.
Beyond emissions
Charging also supports other ESG themes: employee well-being, accessible facilities, local air quality, and partnerships with communities. These can be reported alongside the climate figures.
Avoiding greenwashing
- Report the emissions from charging electricity, not just the fuel avoided.
- State the emission factors and assumptions you use.
- Do not claim charging is zero-carbon unless the electricity is genuinely renewable and documented.
